An Introduction to Canadian History

In Class Notes

These have been my thoughts and notes on subjects we’ve gone through in the slides that I thought were important

Indigenous creation stories

Each tribe has their own stories of how the earth came to be how it is. They are all themed around their traditions and religions. They can be very similar to each others or very different. These stories are passed on from generation to generation and with each story telling new tips and tricks, preparing each other for a fulfilled life. These stories reflected what was important to them and what they wanted others to find important. These stories were often ridiculed or changed from different worldview (Example; Mikmak and the Europeans).

Contact, Cooperation, and Conflict

People came to find fish, furs and spices. They were motived by religion, politics, economics, technology, and demographics. The contact with new people caused lots of conflict because of the new ways of life. It seemed as if they did not know how to work with each other. People were taking advantage and de-powering others. If I was moving to a brand new place with lots of new advantages, I would be very excited to explore. However, if all these new people came into my home, I would be scared and worried that me or my family would be hurt.

The society of New France

-Fur trade companies are in control

-New France needed defence

-Religion has a very strong pressence

-A lot of war

New France struggles to keep their ground. They are going through a lot of war and their people are loosing faith. British rule ends up taking over.

The West

Struggle over Quebec happening at same time that exploration/settlement begins in West. Mapping of the west begins and the fur trade continues to expand. Fur traders had intermingled with Indigenous peoples but new miners/settlers lacked respect for Indigenous peoples. Saw Indigenous services often as unnecessary and viewed as competition for land. Increase in settled communities after 1850s = shift to focus on dispossessing Indigenous peoples from their land. This caused all the fur trade partnerships to come to an end.

Economy and society in BNA

Population is growing ver fast.  Industrialization is causing a need for cheap labour. Theres a decline of farm land and a growth of urban city. All these factors are causing Immigration. Everyone is getting jobs and getting paid. They are happy with the growth of their economy and society.
